Über einen Zeitraum von fünf Monaten haben knapp 30 Teilnehmende in einer ko-kreativen Workshopserie mit traditionellen Handwerkstechniken des Holzschnitts gearbeitet. Sie haben sich künstlerisch mit Themen wie Herkunft und Migration, Klimawandel und geopolitischen Konflikten beschäftigt und diese in eine neue, gemeinsame Bildsprache übersetzt. Persönliche Erinnerungen und Träume wurden in Säulen aus Lindenholz geschnitzt und sprechen nun ohne Worte für sich.
Dieses Projekt der Künstlerin Farila Neshat, kuratiert von Fariba Mosleh, begreift Kunst als ein Werkzeug für Dialog und Transformation. Es bietet in instabilen Zeiten Raum für neue Denkansätze zu Konfliktlösung und Resilienz, in dem bestehende Strukturen hinterfragt und nachhaltige Formen des Zusammenlebens reflektiert werden können.
Die gemeinsam geschnitzten, multiperspektivischen textbasierten Symbole verdichten sich zu einer Installation aus vier monumentalen Holzsäulen. Diese werden mit einer performativen Intervention von Shahrzad Nazarpour und Graziele Sena da Silva sowie einer Vinyl-Session von Ferhat Portakal am 4. Mai 2026 in der Brunnenpassage feierlich präsentiert.
Die Veranstaltung findet statt in Kooperation mit der Klimabiennale Wien.
Die Workshopserie wurde umgesetzt in Kooperation mit Werkstatt Bela Eckermann Design.
Wirbelsäulen ist eine Produktion der Brunnenpassage im Rahmen des Cultural Transformation Movement CTM, ko-finanziert durch das EU Programm Creative Europe und das Bundeskanzleramt für Kunst, Kultur, öffentlicher Dienst und Sport. Farila Neshat ist CTM Artist of Change.

Spiral Spines: Stable in the face of disruption

Over a period of five months, nearly 30 participants worked with traditional woodcut techniques in a series of co-creative workshops. They explored themes such as origin and migration, climate change, and geopolitical conflicts through their art and translated these into a new, shared visual language. Personal memories and dreams were carved into columns of linden wood and now speak for themselves without words.
This project by artist Farila Neshat, curated by Fariba Mosleh, views art as a tool for dialogue and transformation. In times of instability, it offers space for new approaches to conflict resolution and resilience, where existing structures can be questioned and sustainable forms of coexistence reflected upon.
The jointly carved, multi-perspective, text-based symbols coalesce into an installation of four wooden columns, which will be ceremoniously presented on May 4, 2026, at Brunnenpassage, accompanied by a performative intervention by Shahrzad Nazarpour and Graziele Sena da Silva, as well as a vinyl set by Ferhat Portakal.
The event is being held in cooperation with the Climate Biennial Vienna.
The workshop series has been implemented in cooperation with Werkstatt Bela Eckermann Design.
