Salam Orient – Ghalia Benali & Kiya Tabassian

Artist talk with music / Mo 8.5.2023, 19 Uhr

The Iranian musician Kiya Tabassian was already fascinated in his youth by the great poet and mystic Rumi, who lived in the 13th century. When he later crossed paths with the outstanding Tunisian-Belgian artist Ghalia Benali, he knew immediately that her unique voice and expressive performance were perfect for Rumi's timeless, intoxicating poems. Since then, they have been exploring musical ways together to erase all borders in Rumi's spirit.

Marko Kölbl, Head of the Institute for Folk Music Research and Ethnomusicology at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, talks with Ghalia Benali and Kiya Tabassian about their musical approach to Rumi's works (including a short live performance) and their meaning in today's context.
The conversation will be conducted in English.
