Open Call: Facade English

>>Deutsche Version

The Brunnenpassage is currently celebrating its 10 year anniversary. To mark the occasion, the facade and neighbouring outer walls of the Brunnenpassage will be redesigned.

The former market hall at the Viennese Brunnenmarkt has been a thriving site for „Art for all“ since 2007. The ArtSocialSpace Brunnenpassage is both a laboratory and testing ground for trans cultural and participative art processes. With an interdisciplinary programme in the areas of dance, music, and theatre, more than 400 yearly events of the Brunnenpassage have reached over 25,000 visitors. Many of these events are developed in close cooperation with established cultural institutions. Artistic quality combined with low-threshold entry and noncommercial access lead to the enabling and creation of new communal and post-migrant space(s) in the city. The goal is to establish an independent form of coexistence in one‘s own neighbourhood, beyond established social categorizations.
The complex of buildings – located in Europe’s oldest active street market – is made up of a 230m² hall with external walls consisting partly of glass with barrier-free entry points, as well as neighbouring rooms.

The redesign of the building’s facades should conceptually encompass and address the following topics: the fundamental right to art, transdisciplinarity, multilingualism and a diversity of voices, the social impact of art, coexistence, and visions of social cohension for the future.

Conditions of participation:
Local and international artists working in the areas of fine arts,  architecture, urban art and more are invited to apply. If required, accommodation in Vienna can be arranged for the duration of the project. The submitted proposal for transforming the building’s facade should be realised independently. The budget for the selected concept are 5000 Euros and include the cost of materials and artist‘s fee. Technical support in  realising the concept can also be provided. The project will be broadcast concurrently in the media.

The selection procedure will take place in a participative process together with people from the neighbourhood and the team of the Brunnenpassage. The jury reserves the right to work on and further develop the proposed concept with the chosen artist(s). The decision of the jury will be published at the end of June. The members of the jury will be announced shortly.

Each submission must contain the following:
•  Concept for the redesign of the facade (max. 3000 characters)
•  Proposed schedule for realising the project (max. 2000 characters)
•  Budget overview
•  Visualisations in the form of sketches, drawings, images (max. 5 MB)
